Chicago blues

Little Walter

Son Seals

Elmore James

/

Note that the "old"  Blues Chicago style can be devided,

The westside of  the Chicagoblues is more "raw" and agressive.

The Southside style is played more with the harmoica.

Nowadays it´s a mixture of Texas and Chicago blues on electric guitar

and its hard to label.  But what the heck, Blues can be played in all kinds of styles.

Chicago blues was one of the most significant influences on modern rock music.

Guitar Tips From Larry Carlton To His Fans

Larry Carlton is one of my big sources of inspiration

He´s a pro "studiomusician" and has worked with alot of big stars on recordings and albums.

He is known by the name "Mr 335" from the Gibson Model 335. He worked alot with Lee Ritenour too and they made concerts and albums together. In their early career as solo artist both Larry and Lee mostly played on a Es-335. In The 70´s when their first albums came they both had a very special sound, of "fusion- jazz" from Los Angeles, Warm an melodic and lot of "Jazzy harmonies"in their songs. Both worked with the best studiomusicians in the world on their albums.

These guys are proffessionals. And that´s something you´ll notice it very quic, if you are listening to their records. On their albums are often songs that are played with accustic guitars too. Not only electric guitar. Thats the sign of being a pro I think. Also the way they both handle ballads.

Lee R.  often come back to the sound of a basic "classical guitar", with an exellent tone. So does Larry C too, but he uses  guitars with metal strings in a very sophisiicated jazz style. Nowadays both LR and LC has found their own styles, and they both differs alot  from each other today. Larry Carlton is more into the bluezy way and often a littele bit more "aggresive style" than  he was doing in his earlier days.

Lee Ritenour has gone to a totally uniques style nowadays that is notable on his new akbum "Twist of Rit".

Both these cats are very inspirational for many Jazz-fusion guitarists today.

It´s just a matter of your own taste what kind of style you like.

For me I like them both. And it´s impossible to say that one is better than the other.

To me Lee Ritenour is my favourite still. I have all the records of both these cats, I´m lucky to have seen LR live in Copenhagen, but I never had a chance to see Larry Carlton live yet, though I know he has been around in scandinavia too.

Both these cats are in my book of inspirational sources !

By the way, Larry Carlton also gives lesson and tutural "clinics " for serious guitarplayers both in classes and on the net, worth checking if you play guitar!

From Denmark with love! (updated)

(All clips in HD)

These Ladies are outstanding in Rock/fusion and jazz from Denmark!

I love them all!

 Anne Linnet and Sanne Salomonsen

Lis Soerensen

Sanne Salomonsen

Hanne Boel is very special, she is more to soul and fusion style and even Jazz. Here she talks about Jazz in Denmark and her music as well.

And for you guys that doesn´t understand Danish,

I´ll try a little resumee what she is talking about.

She say´s that Jazz and Rock today is an melting pot and she thinks it is stupid to labellize the music and to put it in a box with a label on. Doing that gets people afraid to listen, then you have already made your prejudgement clear. You have already made your choice that you  dislike this music.

-You don´t even get the music a chance.

-Jazz and rock today contains a lot of improvisation, and thats is appreaciated by younger people that don´t categorise or labelling so much any more.

She also knows her audience she says;

- The true jazzfans are more active listeners and demanding, but they are also the most honest to the artists.

-They know when it is good, and I can feel it, when they like what I do. You feel the warmth of the response from the listeners, and that also includes all the members in the band.

Hanne Boel is a pro!

Victor Borge a Danish comedian in music!

(HD)

Victor Borge,

do not need any further presentation I think, but this kind of "rude" satire and humor reminds me a lot of the kind of humor that I associate with the special student-humor of the Swedish town LUND.

He was one of all stars that made  two celebrated shows at "Olympen" in Lund the  9 sept 1977 and 7 oct 1989.

More of him will come later!

By the way he is from Copenhagen, Denmark...

1909-2000 RIP  Mr Borge.

The Closness to Copenhagen / Danish Girls / Damer (Piger)

The Closness to Denmark and Copenhagen for us that lived in Malmö or The Province of Scania (Skåne) had opputunities to listen to Danish Radio and watch Danish TV long before we had cable and Internet. In fact you could hear and see lots of better artists, and listen to more differetiated music than were served by The Biased Swedish Radio and TV.

Denmark served more news of Continental and International Groups and stars than Swedish Radio/TV did, and still does. The homemade "trash" from Sweden Contained numbers of so called "danceband" music and Schlagersingers that were supposed to feed the needs of the "majority" of the listeners in Sweden. The music of those bands were music, often just 3 chord tunes, and that merely was for the unique "Swedish folkparks" in the genuine countryside of Sweden, and to the restaurants that offered dancemusic between the meals and the drinks..

Pure Trash nothing to listen to at all, and so far away you could be from some kind of quality in the shape of the world of music, or what you might think is good music. Almost shamefull to even call music...

Sweden got some big "stars" like ABBA of course, and some other international groups in that gengre. And that´s not so bad.

But in fact Sweden and Denmark had also some fantastic great Jazz and fusion artists that were very well known abroad, But few even knew about in Sweden. The Policy of Swedens National radio called "Public Service" is still the same or even Worse today. That´s my opinion anyway.

Jazzmusic and contemporary music is considered as a music for an extraordinary exclusive bunch of listeners that seems to be hard to satisfy. So Exclusive that your chances to hear some new good jazzmusic from The  Swedish or International Jazzscenes that is if you have some small chance to hear it in the Sundayafternoons for just one or two hours a week, if your lucky!

Today, we are lucky to have Internet, both for listening to the radiostations from all over the world, and watching TV stations, and you can make your choice whenever you like.

Your own  Choice is almost awesome. But it is very sad both for young and older jazzmusicians that indeed are very good, to get their music some attention, and sometimes they don´t even know how to promote themselves anymore in a hardening competitive situation .  That´s a fact but also very sad. The best thing to do is to support these jazzcats that struggle, and give them your support. Giving them your support by going to some conserts if you have the opportunity is the best way. This music is meant to be listen to live.

Here some very good Danish singers and artists that was very well known and loved in South of Sweden in the 80´s and 90´s

I have seen some of them live too. They are all very good!

Lundakarnevalen 2014 Official aftermovie / A Tribute to Karlshamn

Lundakarnevalen 2014  Official aftermovie  in HD

Lund an Old University town in south of Sweden has a tradition to have a carneval every 4th year.

Lots of fun and lots of very special sense of humor, called " Lunds studenthumor". Often comes from the "Spex".

Shows, Varities, "Spex"(Spectacle), "Circus", "Musicals" and "Theatres" all mixed with a lot of Burlesque humor and Satire- all made by the Students themselves.

The Student-humor of Lund is very special,

it contains a lot of irony and sometimes a "rude" satire. Many times a mixture of them both.

(Photos: R Jedemark)

It is hold mainly around the University Building and the Old Cathedral in the centrum of Lund, called Lundagård. Note: Both The Danish and The Swedish flag are always in front of the Old Cathedral.

The big carneval is hold for the whole city. (Check the movie above)

Students from Lunds High School of Technology

and very often Medicine students are those that keep this nice tradition alive.

Alte Kamereren is an old orchestra of amateur-musicians, balletdancers and also students from the music conservatory in Malmö.

everybody take this very "seriously"...and are playing "rather than good" !?

And of course a lot of music!

Dexter Gordon Quartet - Cry Me a River (1955) / Julie London (1955)

Dexter Gordon Quartet - Cry Me a River (1955)

Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor sax), Carl Perkins (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass), Chuck Thompson (drums)

Julie London - Cry me a river (1955)

Julie London (vocals), Barney Kessell (guitar), Ray Leatherwood (bass).

My own Remarks; Dexter Gordons way of his playing , just a little bit slow (offbeat) Typical for Dexters way of playing Ballads, masterful like no one else!

But still correct, makes the way of his playing like he told you a whole real story of suffering ! Here he is about to nearly touch the blues but ... not!

Julie Londons correct singing at time / beat, and sensual voice makes this song something special.

The bassline and the "lonely guitar" gets you somewhere else instead,   in a cold sad and dissapointed  mood.

I like both!

Nostalgia, Lund "Olympen" Sweden

Nostalgia

Lund a University-town in South of Sweden, was a place to be if you wanted to go to great conserts of all kind in 70-90´s.

Most people in my generation that lived in south of Sweden or studied at the University in Lund surely has some kind of great memories of Big and great conserts there.

And we who were lucky to lived near a town like LUND in SWEDEN are many!

"Olympen" in Lund was the Name of the conserthall, well in fact it was an arena built in a big complex of studentdorms that should been meant to be for sportactivities and sportevents.

But instead it became an "institution" for musiclovers of all kind instead.

Recently a historical book and reveiw has come to the bookstores. This book is packed with information, pictures and memories of good concerts and all the great artists that once have been there.

/

I was lucky to live in Malmö (20 years) a town very close to Lund and I had the chances to go to some of these conserts that was held in Lund at that time. The closeness to Copenhagen and the continent surley made it possible for the arranger to get all these amazing big stars to Lund. Its just unbelivable how many of the big stars and bands that has been playing in Lund.

Now, "Olympen" was not the only arena for conserts in Lund, there were also Pub Sparta, and the Auditorium in the big Studentdorm complex called Sparta. Sparta was a 4 big 5-floorhouses for students, so called "studentcorridors" were a student had his/hers single room.

Some concerts were also held in AF, Akademiska Föreningen (The Academic-association house) and also at studentclubs in Malmö.

Well, lots of memories, some that you will remember if you read this book. Names and time and year of the conserts.

It is also an encyclopedia for concerts-nerds and nostalgia, a must have for us who were there at the time being. I´ll come back to this book later as a referecebook.

A good reason to buy this book if you want to refresh old memories of concerts of all kinds, that were held in Lund, and if you have your own "forgotten memories" of all conserts that you have visitied. This book could refresh your memories a little maybe?  Not only for all of the cats that once have studied at the University of Lund or in Malmö, but to all musiclovers as well.

 /

It´s fun to see old pictures, posters and tickets,

Check this out:

Notice: Time changes and so does the stars, and the music, Fairport Convention was once a popular English folk-rock group at this time, today almost forgotten...

But Larry Coryell is one of the greatest Jazzfusion guitarists of all time. He still used to be called "Mr Fusion". Today still going strong. Who is the biggest star today? The brand of his guitar? He still plays the Hagström!  (In this picture above from the book,  Hagström The Swede)

Lee Ritenour - Guitar Player 1976

The Magazine Guitar Player did a recording with

in those days, the best guitarists of 1976

I had this record and it was very good.

It also shows the varaity of different styles in jazzguitar

and jazzartists.

This was a record my teacher recomended me to study and listening to for learning

and understanding different styles and techniques.

One cat that I early got "hooked" on was Larry Coryell,

today I still like him. He is a different cat and plays all kinds of styles today.

In those days 1976 Larry Coryell was "Mr Fusion No 1"

and maybe he still has that title today.

Janne Schaffer, a famus studioguitarist from Sweden and also a "fusioncat" of high class recomended him for me to listening 1975 already!

Note that year 1976, a guy called Pat Metheney was not yet heard of !

But there was one  cat, to me that was very special and

I love his music and style, and he is still my No 1.

His first album in his own name came 1976 - "First Course"

And on his latest album " aTwist of Rit" 2015 are some of these "old"

tunes from that album taken up again, but in a different style.

Good music never gets old!

I have seen him live in Copenhagen/Denmark and he is GOOD!

He was called "Captain Fingers" at that time.

 Mr. Lee Ritenour !

Basia - Cruising for Bruising / Sopot, Poland

Basia is a very good  Polish jazz/rock and fusion artist

That I have seen  live in Sopot, at

Opera Leśna several years ago.

She is a very professional performer and use to have great musicians with her band.

Not very often  you see her name in Sweden thats a pity, but I can assure you she is very big in Poland!

100-lecie Opery Leśnej w Sopocie

This clip is in Polish, and it tells you about the famus "forest theatre-park" an old amusment park in Sopot, Poland that turned 100 years celebration.

The Music festival "The Sopot festival" is annually held here and also a lot of Baltic song contests.

Sopot is widely known for her nice little town with the longest wooden pier (Molo) in Europe at the beach, and also for very famus artgalleries and The Grand Hotel by the long beautiful beach.

She is situated In The Middle of The Three Cities.. Gdynia, Sopot and Gdansk.
